Additional information

This study describes the role of a novel cellular mechanosensor in atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of most heart attacks and strokes. Its fundamental importance is shown by it being discussed in 24 reviews in journals from many fields including physiology, developmental biology, lipidology, antioxidants and redox signalling, sensors, cell biology, biophysics and biomechanics. The work led to funding for three PhDs (BHF Centre of Research Excellence) and one RA (Sinergia Grant of Swiss government, £260k), resulting in a new mechanosensor assay which will be used to identify new drugs that can modify mechanosensor activity.
