Additional information

This is one of only two papers ever to have been given Sciencewatch’s Fast-Breaking award for the high-impact subject of synthetic biology (http://archive.sciencewatch.com/dr/fbp/2010/10aprfbp/10aprfbpColl/). It demonstrates the first design-led synthetic biology project using forward-engineering, going from characterised part libraries via in silico models to working genetic devices. The paper has been recognised as a synthetic biology paradigm by National Academy of Science members including George Church (Nature Biotech review 2009) and Frances Arnold (Current Opinion review 2010). Its approach has directly influenced UK and US investment into synthetic biology centres producing characterised part libraries (BioFAB NSF $3M, CSynBI EPSRC £5M).
