Additional information

The measurement of the effective refractive index of modes is a standard technique for characterising optical waveguides. This paper presents a novel method allowing the effective refractive index of shallow and deep waveguides manufactured by the same process to be mapped into each other. This has utility since if the shallow guide has insufficient modes for an index profile reconstruction, a comparison with the deep guide can still be made. The paper arose from the characterisation of spot size converters in the collaborative EU Framework Programme 6, ISIS Network of Excellence (ISIS FP6-IST-026592).
