English abstract

This essay traces the development of post-war II Italian artistic production in relation to the use of ‘Vinavil’, a very basic, inexpensive and versatile PVA-based glue. The medium’s unusually creative, manifold applications are shown to be a phenomenon specific to Italian art making, and possible motivations as well as aesthetic effects are discussed. Emphasis is given to the works of Alberto Burri, Toti Scialoja, Afro, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Cy Twombly, Piero Dorazio, Giuseppe Uncini, Mimmo Rotella, Mario Schifano, Gilberto Zorio, Piero Gilardi, Mimmo Paladino and Sandro Chia, as well as other selected contemporary artists.
