On state-space elastostatics within a plane stress sectorial domain: the wedge and the curved beam
Significance of output:
A state-space formulation of the linear theory of elasticity is employed for the analysis of the transmission and decay problems for the wedge and the curved beam. The well-known problem of the wedge paradox in elasticity is found to be nothing other than the consequence of an accidental eigenvalue degeneracy for a particular wedge angle, 257 degrees, and marks the breakdown of Saint-Venant’s principle for the wedge. The decay characteristics for the wedge have implications for the Iosipescu shear test, ASTM D5379, in particular whether it is measuring shear strength, or shear fracture toughness.
