Originality: This research focuses on the reduction of distortion in 2D cartoon production, but is also applicable to the more general problems of image warping used for image manipulation. In this work, we have developed an insight into the mathematical mechanism underlying distortion caused by deformation operations. The main contribution is to introduce the integration of vector fields to the deformation that guarantees the deformed shapes being both mathematically continuous, smooth and eliminating unwanted topological anomalies.

Rigour: The development has been supported by a thorough review of existing literature. The rigorous mathematical foundation has ensured the theoretical correctness of the algorithms. To compare it with existing work, we developed numerical experiments with a selection of examples. Our method compares favourably against the state-of-the-art, demonstrating the effectiveness of the derived techniques.

Significance: By incorporating the computation of deformation fields, we presented a unified scheme for 2D mesh and cartoon deformation, which removes the anomalous artefacts associated with the deformation operations for cartoons and images.
