Additional information

The aim of Drawing and the Body - as defined by the curators - was to explore the role that drawing has in conceptualizing and representing the body. Drawing was widely interpreted to include the use of traditional materials and techniques as well as digital drawing, performance and video. The accompanying catalogue, co-edited by myself and Prof. Charlotte Hodes, featured my introductory essay ‘Along Lines and Contours, a Polyphony in the Making’, and key interviews – conducted by the curators/editors; Helen Storey, on concept development and drawing; Simon Thorogood, on drawing and interactive technology; and Philip Delamore, on drawing within a 3D digital environment.

The exhibition featured works by high profile figures such as Professor Helen Storey MBE (Fellow of the RSA), Professor Lucy Orta (artist, environmentalist and Member of the European Cultural Parliament), Simon Thorogood (fashion designer and Research Fellow at LCF) and Charlotte Hodes (winner of Jerwood Drawing Prize 2006) and sixteen new practitioners. Drawing and the Body was an exchange exhibition between London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, and The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, Sweden.

The dialogue inaugurated by the exhibition and the supporting publication was followed by a symposium and exhibition in London featuring designers from The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, Sweden. Both exhibitions were widely covered by the Swedish Press and the positive feedback received within the academic and artistic community has facilitated another collaborative project (exhibition, symposium and publication) between London College of Fashion and the National Gallery, London titled Flight: Drawing Interpretations, curated by Dr Flavia Loscialpo, Ben Whyman and Fiona McKay (June 2013).
