Additional information

This is my second book on Constantin Brancusi, the first was entitled Constantin Brancusi: A Survey Of His Work,1995, Oxford University Press. Caroline Levitt (Courtauld Institute) in Slavonic and East European Review, vol. 89, no. 3, July 11 (unpaginated) in her opening paragraph wrote: “Sanda Miller has been working on Constantin Brancusi since the 1970’s, and her latest contribution to the literature on one of the twentieth-century’s greatest sculptors is a detailed and well-researched biography. A new body of archival material became available to Brancusi scholars in 2001, through a bequest to the Centre national d’art et de culture (CNAC), better known as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Such major gifts to art historians require careful unpacking, and Miller has done an excellent job of digging deeply and thoroughly into hundreds of documents and photographs. The resultant book is centred on primary source material, dispelling long-held myths surrounding Brancusi and attaining perhaps as authentic a portrayal of his life and work as will ever be possible”.

Ruth Wallach, University of Southern California wrote in: Slavic and East European Journal, 55.1, Spring 2011, pp.131-3. “This volume was written for the Critical Lives series of short critical biographies of important figures from the modern period (late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries). Here the art historian Sanda Miller who has written about Brancusi previously, mined his archives for primary documents, photographs, and the inventory of his personal library to explore the life of this reclusive and self-mythologizing sculptor”.
