Research Context and Description:

The research for this publication was carried out in collaboration with level 6 BA Graphic Design students using interview, data collection and analysis, and editorial methods.

The designers interviewed included: Experimental Jetset, Michael Johnson, Wally Olins, Fuel. The book also includes twenty four mini interviews with the graphic designers who provided their research projects for the book.

Significance:

S book 6’s primary objective was to document the self initiated projects of graphic designers. Through interview and example it discusses the role of a visual communicator beyond a functionary of a market economy. The expansion of graphic design as a discipline, has in part, been developed by designers who have initiated personal projects. These investigations have underpinned the fundamental constructs of the discipline and pushed the boundaries of visual communication.

Graphic Design education is predicated upon the concept of developing designers who are instigators in the design process and this book reflects and explains this practice. It is therefore entirely appropriate to archive the thoughts and working methods of graphic designers working in this area.
