Additional information

This paper was developed within a large European project on intervertebral disc substitutes (NMP3-LA-2008-213904; 348,000 Euro). This research has shown for the first time the beneficial effect of mechanical loading in the nutrition of the intervertebral disc, thus demonstrating how the level of patient activity can prevent disc degeneration. This study led to another European project (MySpine FP7-ICT-2009-6-269909; 680,000 Euro) in which the author is coordinator. This paper saw press coverage in BBC News, ABC Newspaper (Spain), and Science Daily.
