Additional information

Laser pulse shaping is a technique used by the laser welding industry to improve weld quality. This is the first research integrating pulse shape control into an Additive Manufacturing (AM) process for fabricating 3D metal parts. Results indicated that specific laser pulse energy distributions exerted additional control over melt pool formation and subsequent part properties, e.g. surface finish and minimum part resolution. This research won a Best Paper award at the Solid Freeform Fabrication symposium in Austin Texas 2008. This work provides a compelling case for the adoption of pulse shape control in standard laser based AM systems.
