Additional information
This is a completely new methodology for detecting cracks in aircraft landing gear during fatigue tests. The approach is based on novel signal processing of acoustic emission data taken from the field of epidemiology. The new approach proved capable of detecting cracks hours before the landing gear actually ruptured. It is the result of several years collaboration with Messier-Dowty with EPSRC and direct company funding. Messier-Dowty are discussing patenting the approach and the success of this project led directly to the award of a further £200k project with Messier-Dowty (contact details available).
