This paper describes the first thorough comparison of experimental and simulated light emission patterns from photonic quasi-crystal LEDs Controlling the direction of light emission is important in optimising the energy efficiency of solid-state lighting. The work resulted from an industrial collaboration led by Shields. The techniques and processes developed underpinned the award of an EPSRC Programme Grant to develop advanced LEDs (EP/I012591/1, £1.36M).
