Output from a collaborative project with Leeds University, (EPSRC grant GR/E036945, £276k) and UK Turbulence HPC Consortium (EPSRC GR/D044073 & GR/G069581, £2.62M). Both Direct Numerical and Large Eddy Simulations were performed to reveal the importance of turbulence intermittency effects in jet flows. The results identified a clear need to model these effects separately for both velocity and scalar fields, and proposed three novel approaches to account for such intermittency. The results can be used to better design combustor and exhaust mixing processes, and hence reduce environmental emissions. (contact Mike Fairweather m.fairweather@leeds.ac.uk). The methodology has been applied in further research into plane jet flows (contact Ranga Dinesh Dinesh.Kahanda-Koralage@soton.ac.uk).
