An output from an on-going multi-disciplinary research collaboration with Kitakyushu University, Japan, building on work on functionally coated fibre optic long period gratings that was pioneered at Cranfield (awarded 1st prize in the Frontier Science and Measurement Category of the National Measurements awards, 2004). The research enables more reliable fabrication and better signal to noise ratios than previously. The collaboration was facilitated by an EPSRC Challenging Engineering project (EP/D506654)
