Additional information

Development of numerical methods for fluid-structure interaction problems was initially through a Cranfield led EU FP6 project. Our research on behaviour of structures under extreme water loading was recognised by two awards in 2009 – the Derek Astridge Award (IMechE) for widening professional and public awareness in the use of technology for aerospace safety, and the Medal of Distinction from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Development of the coupled Finite Element-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (FE-SPH) capability, and numerical approaches to modelling water phenomena, including cavitation, led to Cranfield's further participation in FP7 project SMAES – Smart Aircraft in Emergency Situations (FP7-266172) related to aircraft ditching.
