This paper details, for the first time, key aspects of photonic crystal theory in the total internal reflection case. The results led to an invited talk at ICTON 2013 Conference in Cartagena, Spain. Based on this paper's findings, collaborative programmes of research are being arranged with Lyubchanskii’s group from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In general, the findings represent an important progression in the understanding of light propagation within photonic crystals at highly oblique angles.
