Measurements of a low-temperature mechanical dissipation peak in a single layer of Ta2O5 doped with TiO2
This experiment was designed and constructed by Reid (Reid et al., Physics Letters A, 2006). The relevance of these studies in relation to future GW detectors resulted in groups in the US, Italy, Germany and Taiwan all constructing duplicate testbeds. This led to Reid taking major lead roles in various European and international networks (FP6-STREGA, FP7-ELiTES, Einstein Telescope etc). Reid presented the results at, e.g. Einstein Annual Meeting, Budapest (2010); GWADW meeting, Kyoto, Japan (2010); GWADW meeting, Elba, Italy (2008); 5th Annual ILIAS Annual General Meeting, Spain (2008). These results significantly contributed towards Reid's five year RSE Research Fellowship (£395k).
