Additional information

This paper introduces a novel approach for high-capacity optical storage and coding of information in a medium that has proven to be stable over centuries - glass containing metallic nanoparticles (medieval church window). This was achieved by uniformly and permanently reshaping the nanoparticles inside glass from spherical to elliptical shapes using ultra-short laser pulses. We currently have the capability to both fabricate and process these tailored nanocomposites in-house This work was funded by Professor Abdolvand’s EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship ~£850k - Aug. 2010/Aug. 2015 - EP/I004173/1). Professor Abdolvand supervised the work, is the corresponding author and wrote the paper.
