Additional information

The influence of grain properties on the overall response of granular mass is examined. At low contact loads a soft-plastic response was found. A new contact model based on grain properties such as roundness, roughness, hardness and Young’s modulus is proposed. This paper sets a new direction in understanding stiffness when the rearranging component of the granular deformation is negligible (rip rap exposed to drawdown, pavement engineering, chimney filters in embankment dams).
