Additional information

This study developed novel analytical methodologies (including atomic force microscopy and interferometry) to characterise the structure-function relationships of novel engineered bacterial biofilms employed in biotransformation reactions. This paper, on the interface of microbiological and physical analysis methods, was a collaboration with Dr Rebecca Goss (University of St Andrews). Via BBSRC grant funding with the same consortium (BB/I006834/1; BB/I008713/2 total £891k), the methodology described in this paper will be used to further characterise and optimise immobilised biocatalyst systems in a variety of laboratory and pilot-scale conditions.
