Additional information

<28> The work reported here began in 2006 when Hayward visited the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. It presents results of one of the largest Molecular Dynamics simulations performed at that time with 1.9 million atoms simulated. The aim was to determine the path taken by the nascent polypeptide in the exit tunnel of a bacterial ribosome, a target region for antibiotics. Results suggest that amino-acid Arg92 acts as a gate opening and closing the tunnel. The work was supported by a JST Strategic Japan-U.K. Cooperative Program grant awarded to Ishida and Matsumoto with Hayward supported by the BBSRC.
