Saharan frontiers. Space and mobility in northwest Africa
The Saharan Frontiers project developed from a convergence between McDougall's interest in space and African/Middle Eastern environments in global history, and fieldwork by Judith Scheele (All Souls’/Anthropology) in the Malian-Algerian border region. In his previous post at SOAS, McDougall taught a course on ‘The Saharan World’, and conversations with Scheele led to a conference held in Oxford in 2010, from which the book arose, and a jointly-taught master’s seminar (‘History and anthropology in the Sahara’) that they have run since 2011-12. For the book, they shared translation and editorial responsibilities evenly, revising each other’s work, and co-wrote the introduction.
