Double-weighted statement

A systematic overview of 'medieval' historiography covering a period of more than one thousand years of western European historical writing necessarily required an analysis of a very considerable body, and range, of primary material. It also necessitated a detailed synthesis of the classical and patristic traditions by which this writing was informed, as well as the development of an overarching thesis about the relationship between language (rhetoric) and the representation of historical truth. Finally distilled into just over 200,000 words, the research took some ten years to complete and was supported by one year's sabbatical leave.
