Probabilistic description of grain resistance from simultaneous flow field and grain motion measurements
This paper presents the first experimental evidence that for a natural gravel deposit the entrainment probability can be linked directly with a statistical description of the near bed turbulent flow. It was also demonstrated, for the first time that the statistical resistance of grains to entrainment in a gravel bed could be inferred indirectly from data of near bed flow and individual grain entrainments. The study used analytical and measurement methods developed in EPSRC project GR/N24810/01 and involved collaboration with researchers from the University of Padua. This work provided academic evidence for awarded EU funding via the PARTS 235755 project.
