Additional information

I was co-general editor with Allan Ingram for the entire set. I was sole editor of volume 3, and co-editor with Ingram of volume 4. I co-wrote the general introduction to the set, my specific contribution running from pp. xiii-xix. I co-wrote the introduction to volume 4 (pp. xii-xvii) and contributed items on pp. 1-24, 64-114, 199-224, 245-250, 263-278 and 282-309.

The conception of this output came from my remit as the postdoctoral researcher on the 'Before Depression' project to produce an anthology of material relating to the experience of what would now be called depression. I was approached by the commissioning editor of Pickering & Chatto, who was very interested in the project, and asked to consider developing a proposal. As general editors we conceived the edition, prepared and co-ordinated the proposal, set the intellectual boundaries and editorial procedures for the volumes, and saw the whole set through the press according to the publisher's timetable.
