This essay sets out a different conceptual and interpretative basis for some claims concerning Aristotle's views on definition and explanation which were advanced in the author's earlier work (especially in Aristotle on Meaning and Essence, OUP 2000). In this volume, Charles locates (both in this essay and in the Introduction) Aristotle's views on definition (as set out in earlier work, but now re-interpreted) in a wider historical context, connecting them (where appropriate) with earlier and later analyses of similar issues (by Socrates, Plato, the Stoics and later Greek writers).
