Nonlinear mirror waves in non-Maxwellian space plasmas
This paper presents the first kinetic theory of nonlinear mirror waves that accounts for the observed waves. Mirror waves occur in many heliospheric regions. Nonlinear mirror holes are able to propagate from the proximity of the Sun to regions beyond the terrestrial orbit. Plasma trapped in these holes carry information about regions so close to the Sun from which in situ measurements are not available. The analytical methods developed in this paper were key in securing the STFC grant (ST/G002398/1, http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/project/23683186-83BC-4E92-B4E1-775C919DF06D) and prompted researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (contact: Peter Porazik pporazik@pppl.gov) to contact Balikhin.
