Additional information

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is optical laboratory-based experimental technique used to measure fluid velocities. At time work was undertaken, PIV was typically limited to examining flow in single two-dimensional plane. Paper describes first study carried out using novel multi-level PIV system developed by Patterson while visiting Yale University on Yale University Fellowship in 2009. Work led to further international collaboration with first-author Zhong (now Professor at Tongji University, Shanghai), including a visit to Shanghai in 2012.
