Regular positive-real functions and five-element network synthesis for electrical and mechanical networks
Once desired transfer function for a controller is known, network structure needs to be identified to realise it. Paper shows how to identify most efficient mechanical realisation, which is crucial for minimising controller space and weight. Work shows that only 14 networks are needed to cover all bi-quadratic transfer functions, and was instrumental in Jiang's 2013 appointment to University of Bristol as Lecturer. Parallel inerter-damper design licensed to Penske and is now standard product for various racing teams. Others have applied methodology to investigations into building and railway suspension (e.g. Wang et al., Vehicle System Dynamics, 50, 545-571, 2012).
