Additional information

Paper proposes simple 2-parameter power-curve model to describe stress-strain relationships for silts and clays. This provides tool-kit for design engineers to adopt more-sophisticated soil modelling in routine design calculations. Paper was runner-up for RM Quigley award for top papers in journal [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-82]. Work formed large part of co-author Bolton's 52nd Rankine Lecture (2012) and led to Vardanega's appointment at University of Bristol as Lecturer. Method has been used with Arup for pile-design procedures (Vardanega et al., Proc. ICE Geotech. Eng., 165, 213-32 & 233-46) and has been applied to wind turbines, shallow footings and retaining structures.
