Additional information

There is increasing interest in understanding how credible hydrological and other environmental models are in representing the real world. Paper proposes new diagnostic method, which allows environmental understanding to be used within a statistical framework. Novelty of method is to go beyond an error-metric approach and instead reflect key processes that model is simulating. Method has become widely accepted for evaluation of hydrological models. Work led to Wagener winning 2010 Walter Huber Engineering Research Prize of the ASCE [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-83]. Paper is second most-cited in journal within REF period (Web of Science, 3/11/2013).
