Single lateral mode mid-infrared laser diode using wavelength-scale modulation of the facet reflectivity
Thermal imaging and gas sensing (e.g. for pollutant monitoring) are subjects of great interest that require low-cost tunable steerable infra-red light sources. Paper proposes novel aperture array type of nanoantenna on facet of mid-infrared semiconductor diode laser; this enables laser to become single-moded which is of critical importance in these applications. Paper was instrumental in Cryan obtaining EPSRC grant "Integrated Tunable Flat Lenses (TuneFuL)" (EP/J01303X/1, £640K, 2012-5) with Exeter University. There has also been commercial interest in this technology [contact: Principal Research Scientist, BAE Systems].
