Additional information

Artificial cilia (active hair-like structures) have potential uses in micro- and nano-robotics, and biomedical applications such as implantable trachea. Paper presents first ever analysis of asymmetric flexion in natural cilia in algae and replicates this motion using smart materials. Work was result of collaboration with Cambridge University and led to new collaboration with Stanford University and first-author Sareh's PhD. Paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5.
