Additional information
Effects of plasticity on crack-tip stress fields are not fully understood, especially for real cracks where crack flanks are not perfectly straight. Crack closure is name given to effect of friction between crack flanks on stress intensity factor. Work analyses this complex phenomenon using experimental measurements and analytical model. It shows that crack closure can substantially modify stress field in immediate vicinity of crack tip, thus affecting structural-integrity calculations. Results are of immediate importance to any structural integrity engineer.
