Additional information

Paper describes sensorless position-detection technique, originally conceived for permanent-magnet synchronous machine. Technique is analysed and validated for wound-field synchronous machine with particular application to aircraft engine start applications. Paper analyses, for first time, stability of sensorless position observer demonstrating local asymptotic stability of algorithm. Experimental results performed on an aircraft generator, confirm suitability of scheme (usually reserved for very low-speed operation) to much wider speed range. This shows algorithm has flexibility to accelerate an aircraft engine during its start phase and is being developed further, prior to being considered for use by sponsoring company [see audit file].
