Additional information

Only experimental testing can validate constitutive modelling of granular soils. Paper describes use of advanced equipment to quantify importance of rotation of principal axes and volumetric strain within concept of flow rules for granular materials. A generalised rule is derived and is shown to have dramatic consequences under partially-drained conditions when a stable undrained material can become unstable (liquefiable). Work arose through Royal Society funding in collaboration with Grenoble University and led to Ibraim's invitation to give General Report Lecture at 2013 quadrennial ISSMGE meeting in Paris [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-105].
