Additional information

While reliable wireless video is trivial over high-bandwidth unicast links, video services rapidly collapse over multi-user wireless networks. Paper proposes robust video broadcasting using 802.11a/g and multicast protocols combined with cross-packet erasure codes. Work reports output from TSB "VISUALISE" project (No. 3585-28285, £429k, 2006-8), which led to several granted patents (e.g. WO2012076904A1, US20130263202A1), and project with ProVision [contact: VP Business Development] and CISCO to deliver multi-channel video to 100+ iPhones at basketball arena. Work also led to TSB grant "AIYP" (No. 3585-28285, £275k, 2012-4) and has potential to transform way smartphones are used in public spaces.
