Additional information

This was the first controlled generation of quantum entanglement in a spin ensemble. The ability to perform high-fidelity entangling gates in parallel on ~10 billion spins showed the feasibility of global control methods in quantum computing architectures, greatly reducing the number of control gates needed. The work was widely reported in the international press, including an article in the New York Times. In their report, referees wrote “I expect that this work will be seen as seminal in the field” and called this “the first example of a truly different physical phenomenon made observable by high-frequency ESR” [64 citations (GoogleScholar)]
