Highly Enhanced Thermopower in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems at Millikelvin Temperatures
Using GaAs nanostructures showed that the free electron thermopower was more than two orders of magnitude greater than the value predicted by the Mott formula. It also increased as temperature decreased, in contradiction to predicted behaviour. This large departure from established theory has stimulated theoretical work into the role of the electron-electron interaction in nanodevices, this is very significant for their possible use in quantum-computation. It is also important for establishing the validity of theoretical techniques and the phenomenon is being investigated in further work. This work developed through, and extended, a UK-India collaboration funded by a UKIERI grant (£80k).
