Additional information

Since the 1930’s there has been considerable interest in the Wigner Lattice in which the distribution of electrons arises from their mutual repulsion. Here we investigated the transition between a one and two dimensional system at very low values of carrier concentration. The ground state of one line is not stable and disappears to be replaced by 2 lines in parallel. This was the first observation of a distribution created by the electron repulsion, enabling development of theory, and was of considerable importance in the recent award of a Programme Grant, PI, M Pepper, EP/K004077/1, £6.57M.
