Grating lobe control in randomised, sparsely-populated MIMO radar arrays
Describes a technique to reduce MIMO radar array sidelobes by randomising element positions, showing the novel result that statistical distribution (PDF) of virtual element positions is equal to self-convolution of that of the real positions, thus aiding optimised array design. Work relates to a NERC-funded project on radar avalanche imaging (NE/F004621/1, £386,029) and has led to follow-on NERC and EPSRC funding for Brennan(PI) of radar imaging of geophysical phenomena including Antarctic ice shelves (with BAS), NE/I000623/1, NE/J005630/1 and EP/K00767X/1, of total value £631,973, results of which were featured in the Discovery Channel programme ‘X-ray Yellowstone’, first screened December 23rd 2012.
