Additional information

This paper describes the first monolithically integrated heterodyne optical phase lock loop with electronic phase detection. The photonic integrated circuit was designed at UCL and fabricated under sub-contract at CIP (now Huawei), Ipswich. We demonstrated how two such loops could be integrated to form a photonic frequency synthesiser with applications in coherent optical communications and THz generation. EPSRC has supported application of this technology to optical communications through the £0.49 million COSINE (EP/I012702/1) grant and author Seeds was awarded the 2012 IoP Gabor Medal and Prize in recognition of his work on such microwave photonics technology.
