Additional information

This paper reports the first demonstration of a coherent optical receiver based on the Optical Injection Phase Lock Loop technique invented by the last author. The receiver eliminates the digital signal processing load inherent in non-phase-locked receivers and allows commercially available semiconductor lasers to be used, rather than laboratory type external cavity narrow-linewidth lasers. The research was supported by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) ($356k) for deployment in highly sensitive optical receiver applications, leading to AFOSR funding ($410k) of further research on THz applications.
