The Illustrated Brighton Moment
Jones commissioned and edited the prose contributions of this anthology. The research objective of the editors was to draw on Brighton’s distinct geography, culture, literary and artistic traditions and create a series of snapshots which, when viewed and read together, become a unique document, a contemporary vision of the city and a record for a future readership. The project began as a live event (at the Brighton Fringe and the Brighton Festival, co-produced by Jones) featuring specially written work by local writers. The contributors to the book are Brighton-based writers and illustrators working in a range of genres including, for example, journalism, crime fiction, historical fiction, animation and album cover design. The contributors were chosen for their distinct voices, their ability to innovate and to understand the concept of the whole project as well as their own contributions. The prose pieces and illustrations are independent of each other but all writers and illustrators were given the same brief, thus giving equal value to the visual image and to text. The work depicts a wide variety of locations and people in the city, showing both interior and exterior ‘moments’ through a range of genres and approaches. The Illustrated Brighton Moment is an innovative collection of original illustrations and non-fiction prose pieces inspired by the theme a Brighton moment.
