Arts University Bournemouth
Curated Exhibition: Crab by the Sea: Peter Cook and a Sideways Look at Architecture held 15 November 2010 to 7 January 2011.
The exhibition was the first in the newly extended AUB Gallery. The exhibition and new gallery spaces were officially opened by Sir Mark Jones, Director of the V&A Museum on 3rd December 2010. The exhibition considered projects from the career of Professor Sir Peter Cook, alumnus of the AUB (Bournemouth College of Art 1953-58) and Design Fellow 2008. The exhibition was supported by Terence O’Rouke Ltd (£3000) and Solid Space Ltd. (£1000).
Beeson was responsible for all aspects of the exhibition.
Research Imperatives
Beeson selected early drawings and collages illustrating the Archigram projects for Bournemouth from the Archigram Archive at the University of Westminster, in collaboration with Dennis Crompton (member of the Archigram group, archive manager): “Bournemouth Nets” (1966), “Bournemouth: Instant City” (1968), and Bournemouth Steps (1970). This material demonstrated pre-digital architectural presentation methods from the 1960’s, including a Duchamp inspired brief case with drawings, model and slide viewer for Bournemouth Steps. This also introduced a local audience to the little known or published archival proposals for Bournemouth.
The other works included selected drawings by Cook and recent projects (under construction or competition entries) from his practice CRAB (Cook Robotham Architecture Bureau), selected during two studio visits before the exhibition.
Beeson developed the unique installation of curved tables in collaboration with CRAB; commissioned new models for the show; and designed the catalogue in collaboration with CRAB. A documentary film was also commissioned.
Beeson also organised a one day symposium COAST, held during the exhibition for students and regional architects, with invited contributions from Prof. Sir Peter Cook, Dr Marcus Cruz (Barlett), Mike Davis (Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners), Prof. Richard Horden (Hordon Cherry Lee Architects and Technical University Munich), Yael Reisner (Architect) and Roger Zogolovitch (Architect/Developer). There were 144 bookings.
