Additional information

The paper presents a new analytic model of the performance of tidal turbine arrays partially blocking a wide channel. It includes a new theoretical upper limit on energy extraction from confined tidal stream turbine arrays, replacing the Betz limit inherited from the wind industry. This work led to the development of further channel dynamics models, and associated publications, for partial tidal fences. These models have now been used industrially to design a multi-turbine tidal array for planned deployment in 2015 (contact: ETI Marine Programme Manager).
