An art scene as big as the Ritz: the logics of scenes
The essay addresses art scenes by drawing upon observations of, and my involvement in, specific scenes and through referencing Gilles Deleuze's notion of 'diagrams' as presentations of points that resist signifying regimes and engender new organisations and orientations. At the same time, Deleuze’s concept is reflected upon through addressing the singularities of scenes, and diverges from existing discussions of art as diagrammatic practice. In addressing scenes as collective experimentation, art scenes are proposed as something more than professional networks or 'habitus'. The research was delivered as a paper at Kent University 12/3/13 and Royal Academy of Art 11/2/13.
