Estelle Thompson

A solo exhibition of 18 oil paintings (42 x 30 cm - 262 x 187 cm) investigating the theory and use of colour, pure geometry, the Golden Section and modes of division used historically in abstract composition. The phenomena of colour perception, colour vision and optical sensation were all factors in the research. The use of aluminium supports and silver pigment suspended in wax (painted surfaces) were key to my optical experimentation, and unique in terms of material technique and development. I was interested in the colour theories of Cesare Ludovico Musatti considering the phenomenon of equalization. I also designed and fabricated a Prototype desk 2009 in collaboration with Gary Woodley, fabricated in birch ply, polypropylene and oil on panel, 88 x 59 x 72 cm. This project evolved out of a commission to design a Meet and Greet desk for Hull Teaching PCT, LIFT Arts and Health Programme-Orchard Park. The fundamental aspects of furniture design and manufacture were combined with a 2D painting section within 3D colour design – in essence a 3D painting. The integration of product design and painted elements were exclusive research concerns. The original digital drawings formed a series of digital prints, exhibited and later purchased for the LIFT Collection at Orchard Park. Production on demand is currently being developed for the desk, which is on permanent display at the Oriel Sycharth Gallery, Wales. A 24 page full colour catalogue Estelle Thompson 2009 (ISBN 978 1 873 184 07 3) was published and funded by Purdy Hicks Gallery and Glyndwr University, Wrexham. The website www.estellethompson.com was launched at this time. There was an ‘In Conversation’ – Estelle Thompson and Charles Danby’ at the gallery on 03.11.2009 and a talk for Graduate and PG Fine Art and Design students from Glyndwr University on the 09.11.2009.
