This paper reported a robust and efficient hybrid-optimisation method used to determine the coupling matrix of cross-coupled microwave filters of diverse and complex topologies. The method can be used to design multi-band filters and multiplexers of increasing complexities that are in great demand for modern communication systems. The method has been verified by the demonstration of an eighth-order X-band dual-band waveguide filter. The optimization method has been adapted for the recent developments of novel multiplexers and partly informed the EPSRC project EP/H029656/1.
